It takes a province to end homelessness: Presentation notes

Yesterday I delivered the keynote presentation to the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing and Homelessness Network conference at Port Blandford on Oct. 26. In my presentation, I warned that the ongoing erosion of federal housing investments will cut vital funding that local groups across Newfoundland and Labrador require to develop effective housing solutions.

Innovations in financing affordable homes: Presentation to UofT/OISE social economy forum

There’s no such thing as a ‘no money miracle’ when it comes to affordable housing. Project developers need money for development (or acquisition of existing homes), and also money for daily operations, and a third bag of money as a reserve for future issues (like replacement of appliances). The Wellesley Institute’s Michael Shapcott gave a presentation to the social economy speakers’ series at University of Toronto / OISE on innovation in housing financing in the past, and innovation that’s on the horizon. International housing / homelessness summit in Washington: Wellesley Institute presentations

The Wellesley Institute’s Michael Shapcott was among two dozen housing / homelessness thought and practice leaders who gathered in Washington, DC, last week for an international summit. In addition to supplying a brief overview of Canada’s ‘non-system’ of homeless and housing programs at the national level, he delivered a short presentation to summit participants, then later delivered a second presentation to senior US government housing and homelessness officials at a meeting at the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness. More details on the international summit will be posted shortly.

Homefullness for all of Canada: Presentation to Dignity for All national summit

Dignity for All – the national campaign for a poverty-free Canada – held a national summit in Ottawa on March 3, 2011. The Wellesley Institute’s Michael Shapcott delivered a presentation on housing and homelessness that underlined the many costs of deep and persistent housing insecurity and the impact of the eroding federal investments, and set out a five-point agenda for action - drawn from the Wellesley Institute’s Precarious Housing in Canada report.

Creating homefullness in Ontario – presentation to Toronto Anglican diocesan committee

Creating homefullness in Ontario is the title of a presentation to the Anglican Diocese of Toronto’s Social Justice and Advocacy Committee by the Wellesley Institute’s Michael Shapcott on Tuesday, March 1, 2011. In this presentation, Michael provides a brief overview of the housing landscape, Ontario government initiatives and offers advice to committee members, who have been active in recent years in meeting with their MPPs on housing and homelessness issues.

Victoria and Kelowna: Presentations from west coast housing / homelessness tour

The Wellesley Institute’s Michael Shapcott was invited to Victoria and Kelowna as part of a west cost housing / homelessness tour. He gave presentations on a range of issues, including housing, homelessness, complex social issues and dynamic community solutions to the Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness, Mayors and Municipal Representatives from the Victoria CRD, at a community forum in Victoria, at a research symposium at University of Victoria and in a day-long meeting at University of British Columbia – Okanagan in Kelowna. Michael was also given an early-morning escorted tour of Victoria’s homeless shelters and supportive housing projects by Mayor Dean Fortin. Read the rest of this entry »

Sleepwalking to segregation: How housing, income, health are linked – presentation notes

The growing body of evidence that shows Toronto is becoming a more divided city as people and populations, also suggests that the city is increasingly segregated by housing, income and health.
