The Wellesley Institute wishes all of Toronto a happy and healthy Pride. As the Wellesley Institute celebrates Pride Week, we also mark the founding of our legacy institution, the Wellesley Hospital, in June of 1911. We’ve been going through boxes of photos and videos and digging up key moments from our history. The Wellesley Institute has long been engaged in research and policy work with partners in the LGBT community, and the Wellesley Central Hospital developed a pioneering LGBT practice.
In the mid-1990s, the Wellesley Central Hospital and the 519 Community Centre collaborated on “Behind the Bruises,” an instructional video for health care workers to address the problem of gay bashing. Even though this video was made 16 years ago and seems really retro, sadly, hate crimes against the LGBT community continue, and these lessons from 16 years ago remain important and relevant. We hope that this video will soon become obsolete. Happy Pride!
