A total of $7.25 billion and counting – that’s the amount of money that the US government is planning to spend directly on non-profits in the coming fiscal year. The US federal government is in the midst of the annual budget dance – the President proposes, then the House and Senate kick the plans around for a while. The Non-Profit Quarterly has just released its latest tally on programs of direct interest to non-profits that are currently in the appropriations process. This includes everything from big ticket items – like the Community Development Block Grant program at almost $4.5 billion – to the Obama adminstration’s proposed $50 million social innovation fund. There are several other important programs, like YouthBuild ($105 million) and $243 million for neighbourhood investment. Add in the Corporation for National and Community Services (which includes Americorps) at $1.1 billion and the dollars start to add up. (For Canadians, please note that these dollars are all US.)
