Upcoming Event: Discussion of the WHO Conference on the Social Determinants of Health

With the World Health Organization Conference on the Social Determinants of Health now over, we can now begin to ask whether it made any progress towards building support for the implementation of action on social determinants of health. The Conference ended with two declarations: the official political declaration and the alternative civil society declaration.

Margot Lettner – Principal, Wasabi Consulting and an Associate of The Wellesley Institute – will lead a special post-Rio forum at the Wellesley Institute on Tuesday, December 6th, 10:30 am-noon to discuss some of the outcomes from the WHO Conference. The session will be open for conversations about what concrete work can be done now to move determinants-based approaches into practice here, in Ontario, that will build momentum, advocacy and better outcomes across communities and policy sectors. The forum will address:

  • Reconnecting priorities with frontline health;
  • New and broader forms of civil society and citizen participation in public policy-making;
  • A global health ethics that mandates protocols for health governance;
  • Collaboration between health and sustainable development; and
  • The right to health as a human right.

Margot attended as delegate to the WHO World Conference on Social Determinants of Health. In 2010, she facilitated WHO’s pre-conference Advisory Group consultation on social determinants of health. Margot wrote a series of blogs from Rio for the Wellesley Institute.
