Practice Strategies for Austere Times: Building Homes in York Region

An affordable housing summit in York Region on June 11 drew together municipal politicians, housing, social services and health officials from local and regional governments, along with community leaders and private sector representatives, to lay the foundation for a new strategy for the booming region north of the City of Toronto. The Wellesley Institute’s Michael Shapcott delivered a presentation on effective partnerships for healthy and inclusive communities, including researchers and analysts to study the issues and identify promising solutions; federal and provincial governments (whose housing and social investments have been declining over the past two decades); the community and private sectors – key partners in building and operating local initiatives; and the financial sector (whose expertise is required to navigate through new forms of social finance.
