A pilot survey was designed to learn about how people felt about the quality of oral health care given to economically disadvantaged Canadians. Researchers sent out questionnaires to oral health care agencies across Canada known to service disadvantaged groups. Most respondents felt that the quality of oral health care in Canada was generally positive. Many also felt, however, that access to oral health services for the young and poor needed improvement. People on welfare and the working poor have limited access to oral health services in Canada., and poor oral health has been linked with risk for diabetes and other health conditions. These findings were brought to a symposium raising awareness about challenges in the oral health care system and informed initiatives designed to improve access for identified populations.
