Researchers held several discussion groups with youths aged 16 – 29 who recently emigrated from Southern Africa. The youths were asked about the challenges they faced settling into Canada. They also identified areas of research they felt were most useful for addressing these concerns. Major concerns included physical and mental health, intimidating immigration policies, and accessing culturally sensitive service agencies. Participants also had concerns about foreign educational and work experience not being recognized in Canada and general racial inequality. Using a community based approach, the researchers developed a full research proposal designed to address the issues raised by participants.
