Irene completed an Honours Bachelors of Science Degree at the McMaster University and is now pursuing a Master of Science in Sustainability Management at the University of Toronto, with a collaborative specialization in Environmental Studies. Irene’s academic interests centers around health equity and sustainable development, with an emphasis on racial inequities in employment, education, and housing. She is also interested in the intersection of social justice and environmental sustainability, which stems from her experiences working with the Tsartlip First Nations and assisting in biodiversity and conservation research in Honduras. As an advocate for education and anti-oppression, Irene has extensive community engagement experience in Hamilton and Toronto surrounding anti-racism and supporting initiatives aimed at addressing the underrepresentation of Black students in academic institutions.
