Home Environment Assessment for the Visually Impaired

The Home Environment Assessment for the Visually Impaired tool assesses specific fall-related hazards for older adults with visual impairments. It includes 45 checklist items across eight rooms of the home (entryway, living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, stairs and hallways). The tool evaluates five classes of fall risks including handrails, lighting, floors, furniture and other, and includes the evaluation of hazards such as hallways and thresholds, steps and stairs, clutter, furniture safety and bathroom features. The Home Environment Assessment for the Visually Impaired is conducted through an in-person home inspection by trained assessors.
