In any given year, one in five people in Canada will experience a mental health problem or illness. Mental well-being is affected by the social determinants of health. Inequalities such as racism, poverty and homelessness can contribute to poorer mental well-being. Access to safe and affordable housing, meaningful education and employment, leisure activities, the support of a community, good access to healthcare and mental health services all support good mental well-being.
