There are some tremendous innovations underway across the public health field on addressing social determinants and health inequities in their communities. I believe public health is one of the most important mechanisms to drive health equity into action across the province and country. I had the pleasure of doing two half-day workshops with Windsor-Essex County PHU.
The long workshops allowed time to set out an 18 point toolkit of promising practices, effective tools, techniques and directions for building equity into public health practice. As always, what also surfaced is that front-line staff were already identifying priority disadvantaged populations and how systemic barriers played out in their areas, and had come up with a wide range of innovative programs and ideas for addressing equity on the ground. Coming together to share common challenges and innovative initiatives highlights the value of these kinds of workshops and of equity-orientated knowledge sharing and capacity building
