Dr Bob Gardner spoke to a plenary session of a recent conference on social housing and homelessness organized by the Ontario Municipal Social Services Association and housing and hostel partners. He sets out data on pervasive health disparities and shows how these inequalities were related to income, gender, ethno-cultural background , social exclusion and other broad determinants. Bob argues that none of this is inevitable, and sets out a roadmap for building health equity through a comprehensive set of policy changes and community mobilization. This particular talk draws connections between these lines of necessary action and social housing, local services and community-based planning.
