The federal government has just days remaining to make its formal response to In from the Margins, the comprehensive report adopted unanimously by the Senate of Canada that calls for a national housing and homelessness strategy. Under Parliamentary rules, the federal government must reply to the Senate report by Sunday. While the feds may politely dismiss the report, rumours from Ottawa suggest that the federal government is preparing a more substantive reply. The Wellesley Institute’s Precarious Housing in Canada 2010 notes the eroding federal role in housing in both funding and programs over the past two decades, and notes that Canada is one of the only major countries in the world without a national housing plan. The Wellesley Institute hosted a national webinar with Senator Art Eggleton earlier this year on the Senate report.
