Housing, homelessness, health cut in Toronto’s 2010 municipal budget

The first draft of Toronto’s 2010 operating budget sets out cuts to affordable housing, homelessness, public health and city planning funding. Spending on the affordable housing office, social development and community partnerships has been flat-lined. Meanwhile, the police budget is set to increase by almost double the rate of inflation.

Sheila Block

Sheila Block was Director, Economic Analysis at the Wellesley Institute 2010-2015. Sheila is an economist whose research interests include labour markets and public finance. Sheila joined Wellesley Institute in 2010 after more than 15 years of advocacy and research for organizations including the Ontario Federation of Labour and the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario. She has also worked both as a political advisor and public servant in the Ontario government.

Acknowledgement of Traditional Land

We wish to acknowledge this land on which the Wellesley Institute operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.
