This report by Wellesley Institute is the result of interviews and focus groups with 33 community members and subject matter experts on community violence in Toronto. It examines the ways in which violence manifests in communities, the effects it has, and the interventions that are needed to address it.
Researchers learned we must think beyond isolated high-profile events of community violence. Instead, community violence must be understood as a reflection of ongoing trauma.
Key among the recommendations is the need for long-term investments in programs across a continuum of needs that address the social determinants of health. There must be a culture shift in how community violence is understood and approached.
