The murder in Toronto of Bly ‘California’ Markis, 33, a homeless woman, in late April 2007, focused attention on the violence that people who are homeless suffer on the streets. People who are homeless face high rates of physical and sexual violence, according to research from Toronto, Canada, the United States and Europe. This backgrounder provides information on violence and the homeless.

Michael Shapcott is Director, Affordable Housing and Social Innovation at Wellesley Institute.
