The Canadian Nurses Association has done a backgrounder on the social determinants of health for its members.
The Association urges nurses to build understanding the social determinants into their assessments, and treatment and follow up plans; know what community resources are available to clients; if they work with disadvantaged communities, to help people with common health issues understand their link to social determinants; work to re-orientate the health system by ensuring that health promotion goes beyond lifestyle and behaviour to take determinants into account; advocate for universal access to basic health programmes such as dental care and pharmacare; and work to develop policy initiatives that address how structural issues of class, race and gender affect health.
