Mark your calendar and plan to attend the Toronto Mayoral Debate on Affordable Housing, sponsored by Habitat for Humanity, on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at 7.30 pm at OISE, 252 Bloor Street West. When the Wellesley Institute published our Blueprint to End Homelessness in Toronto in 2006, we helped spark a public debate that led the City of Toronto in 2009 to adopt its Housing Opportunities Toronto plan. In 2007, we funded the Street Health Report, a detailed look at the health status of people without homes. Is Toronto doing enough to ensure everyone has a healthy and affordable home? Here’s your chance to hear six of the leading mayoral candidates explain their housing policies.

Michael Shapcott

Michael Shapcott is Director, Affordable Housing and Social Innovation at Wellesley Institute. Michael has worked extensively in Toronto, in many parts of Canada, nationally and internationally on social innovation, the non-profit sector, civic engagement, housing and housing rights, poverty, social exclusion, urban health and health equity. He is recognized as one of Canada’s leading community-based housing and homelessness experts. He is currently on secondment to the Princes' Charities Canada.

For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.
