Diversity, Aging, and Intersectionality in Ontario Home Care

Ontario’s changing demographics bring challenges to the home care sector. Three issues are at the intersection of these challenges: the rapid growth of our aging population, the expanding ethnocultural diversity of our seniors, and the pressure felt by the home care sector. We usually think of them separately, but when they intersect there’s a multitude of new factors we need to consider.

This paper explores the intersection of ethnocultural and linguistic diversity within our aging population and the implications for home care in Ontario.

Nazeefah Laher

Nazeefah Laher is a Wellesley Junior Fellow. She holds a Masters of Public Health from the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Health. Nazeefah’s academic and research focus has been on health inequities and the social determinants of health, with an emphasis on paediatric health, racial inequities, and public policy. She has held positions at the Centre for Research on Inner City Health at St. Michael’s Hospital, the Model School’s Clinic at St. Michael’s Hospital, and the PERCC (Policy and Economics Research in Childhood Cancer) at Sick Kids Hospital. As a Wellesley Junior Fellow, Nazeefah is excited to be working to advancing population health and reducing health inequities in the City of Toronto. @nazeefahlaher

Acknowledgement of Traditional Land

We wish to acknowledge this land on which the Wellesley Institute operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit.
