The inequitable health outcomes and the stigma, discrimination and other barriers to access to health faced by LGBTQ communities have been well documented. In celebrating Pride, we can also celebrate the enormous work done to address these inequities: from the pioneering HIV/AIDS movement that transformed not just the face of a crucial disease, but how ‘patients’ are engaged in transforming the way clinical research is done, ensuring access to treatment and the information needed to manage one’s own care, and defining what constitutes high quality care; to the continuing vital role of organizations such as Rainbow Health Ontario in promoting the best possible care and health for LGBTQ communities. Health care institutions can also take the opportunity of Pride Week to reaffirm their commitment to equitable access and quality care for their LGBTQ clients and populations. The American Joint Commission and California Endowment have produced a comprehensive Field Guide that provides an excellent resource to help all providers deliver equitable care for all.
